Canon’s latest retinal cameras really do sweat the small stuff, like the ability to spot macular waste that builds up in the retinal pigment epithelial layer. Fundus Auto Fluorescence (FAF) comes standard with the CX-1 and CR-2 PLUS models. Here are the specs on Canon’s dynamic duo:

CX-1: Hybrid Mydriatic/Non-Mydriatic Multi Function

  • Captures digital images in five different photography modes, including color, red-free, FA, cobalt and FAF.
  • Uses renowned Canon Electro-Optical System (EOS) camera technology for images with terrific resolution and color fidelity.

CR-2 PLUS: Color Non-Mydriatic Imaging with FAF

  • Canon EOS technology packs a large, high-definition complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) censor with 18 megapixels for superior digital images.
  • Can help prevent AMD by discovering and monitoring macular waste like lipofuscin.
  • The photos below show an example of a patient with dry AMD captured both as a color image and FAF.

Both cameras use Canon’s ImageSpectrum software for image management. The software offers easy access to your data and it integrates with electronic medical records.

Pediatric Device Nips Amblyopia Early

March 22, 2012

41

A new handheld scanning device has delivered a crushing blow to amblyopia. The breakthrough scanner helps pediatricians identify – in just seconds – lazy eye in children as young as 2 when they’re most responsive to treatment.

Amblyopia has been difficult to diagnose in children because they can’t communicate what they see on eye charts. The disease is also very difficult to detect when a child is so young, but spotting it early is key to successful treatment.

“The eyes of a child with amblyopia can look perfectly fine, even while one eye is slowly losing vision,” said Dr. David Hunter, chief of ophthalmology at Children’s Hospital Boston. “Once a child reaches school age, treatment is less likely to restore useful vision. We’d really like to begin treating them when they’re three years old – or younger.”

Testing of the scanner revealed an overall sensitivity and specificity of 96 percent for detecting amblyopia compared to gold-standard ophthalmology tests. The study tested the device in 202 children.

Dr. Hunter said he hopes the device will find its way to general pediatric practices to screen toddlers and preschoolers before it’s too late.

For more information on the study and a YouTube demonstration, check out the press release.
