Purchase Equipment before December 31 for Substantial Tax Savings

February 25, 2008

Section 179 of the IRS Tax Code allows a small business or professional practice to deduct the full purchase price of financed or leased equipment in the current tax year. Qualifying equipment must be within the specified dollar limits of Section 179, and the equipment must be placed into service in the same tax year that the deduction is taken. For tax year 2008, this means the equipment must be put into service before 12/31/2008. For further information, visit www.section179.org and ask your tax advisor how Section 179 can best fit your business needs.

Intelligent strategies for the purchase of new equipment, in many ways, allow you and your staff to become more efficient and productive.

Build Your Practice During A Recession

February 1, 2008

A series of six studies conducted by the research firm of Meldrum & Fewsmith showed conclusively that advertising aggressively during recessions increases sales and profits.

A McGraw-Hill study analyzed 600 companies covering 16 different SIC industries from 1980 through 1985. The results showed that business-to-business firms that maintained or increased their spending during the 1981-1982 recession averaged significantly higher sales growth, both during the recession and for the following three years, compared to those that eliminated or decreased their ad budget. By 1985, sales of companies that were aggressive recession advertisers had risen 256% over those that didn’t keep up their advertising.

Sales for the companies studied were relatively even before the recession, but varied sharply during and after it. Companies that cut advertising during both of the recessionary years maintained flat sales during the period and only modest sales growth in the following two years. By contrast, companies that maintained their advertising experienced significant sales growth throughout the four-year period.

In analysis of the 1990-91 recession, Penton Research Services, Coopers & Lybrand, in conjunction with Business Science International, found that better performing businesses focused on a strong marketing program enabling them to solidify their customer base, take business away from less aggressive competitors, and position themselves for growth during the recovery.
