Celebrating with Bubbly

Champagne - cause for celebration and eye injury.

Champagne - cause for celebration and eye injury.

Hundreds of eye injuries happen every year as people celebrate special occasions. Few realize that a cork can fly up to 80 mph and cause devastating injury.

Share these tips with your patients as spring weddings and celebrations approach.

  • Chill sparkling wine to at least 45 degrees Fahrenheit before opening. The cork of a warm bottle is more likely to pop unexpectedly.
  • Don’t shake the bottle. Shaking increases the chances of eye injury.
  • To open the bottle safely, hold down the cork with the palm of your hand while removing the wire hood. Point the bottle at a 45-degree angle away from yourself and from any bystanders.
  • Place a towel over the entire top of the bottle and grasp the cork.
  • Keep the bottle at a 45-degree angle as you slowly and firmly twist the bottle while holding the cork to break the seal. Continue to hold the cork while twisting the bottle until the cork is almost out of the neck. Counter the force of the cork using slight downward pressure just as the cork breaks free from the bottle.
  • Never use a corkscrew to open a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine.

In the event that an eye injury occurs, seek medical help immediately.

Your Practice is Your Best Investment

The traditional investment mindset is: make money in your practice and sock away the profits in stocks, bonds, real estate and other investment vehicles.

It’s certainly commendable to invest and save, but the most overlooked investment, and potentially the most profitable, is your own practice. The eye care industry is one of the few economic positives with a forecast of increasing numbers of baby boomer patients requiring treatment for ocular pathology.

In today’s economy, you need to make shrewd investment decisions. It’s time to invest in the assets you know best - your own knowledge, skills and creativity!

The aspects of a professional practice in which to reinvest additional funds include:

  • Marketing - Strategic increases in marketing budgets can immediately increase practice revenue.
  • Equipment - Upgrade your ophthalmic equipment to increase productivity and efficiency. New equipment is more accurate, is easier to use, and communicates to your patients that you are at the top of your profession with the technology you use.
  • Expand your facility and add new products and services
  • Enhance your practice infrastructure with new software, and train your staff to utilize it.

Investment in your professional practice benefits your patients. Simply put, new equipment is superior to old equipment. Optics are better, images are crisper, and measurements are more precise. Patients are happy when their diagnostic results and their surgical outcomes are exceptional.

Call Bell today at 800-255-5929 to discuss investment options that will enhance your revenue stream and truly pay dividends - for you, your employees, and your patients.
