Wills Eye Performs Historic Eye Implant Surgery

Jun 10, 2014 | Customer Spotlight

[column size=”one-half”]Longtime Bell Ophthalmic customer Wills Eye just made history. Again.

The Philadelphia institution became the first hospital in the region to perform telescopic eye implant surgery.

About the size of a small pea and surgically placed inside one eye, the FDA-approved device restores vision to age-related macular degeneration patients.

“Vision as a sense is highly valued,” said Dr. Carl D. Regillo, director of the Wills Eye Hospital Retina Service. “In general, people fear death as their number-one medical fear, and number two is losing their vision. We’re in a charged, anxious area when people have vision problems.”

While there’s no cure for diseases like AMD that affect millions worldwide, innovations like the tiny eye implant offer hope in a big way.

This isn’t Wills Eye’s first time in the news, either. Ranked #2 in the country by U.S. News & World Report, the non-profit ophthalmology hospital made headlines in 2013 by taking its glaucoma clinic directly to patients.
